By a good review, we mean a review that is a proper review of the music, not just a rehash of the press release. Be it good or bad, as long as its constructive. A proper review is when someone really listens to the music and actually forms their own opinion, chooses their words well and paints a picture for you of the sonics they experience when they listen to the music. So here, we give a thankful nod to Andrew Wowk from Pulse Radio.net for his great (proper) review of Sonarpilot Remixes EP3.
Review: Sonarpilot ‘Radar/Corrosion’ (Sonarpilot Audio)

Sonarpilot Audio has made quite the mark in 2011, and until now, it was only two EPs into its lifespan. The third release, featuring original material from label head Sonarpilot and remixes from Trevino and Viva Shade continues the label’s exploration of that exciting middle-ground where dubstep and garage sensibilities blend with the techno and house sound palettes.

The original of Radar is at its core a low-slung, slow-mo house ride, but it takes in elements of early 90s ambient, Detroit techno and garage along the way. It’s a lesson in how to put together supposedly contradictory elements into a coherent whole: the beats are tight and snappy, but surrounded by slightly loose organic percussion, the bassline is deep, dark and rumbly but offset by light, warm synth stabs, and choppy, mumbled vocals are occasionally swapped for Eastern chants.

Marcus Intalex turns in a remix of Radar under his new Trevino moniker, a pseudonym created so he can explore music outside the realm of drum & bass. His remix is lush, driving, melodic techno, but it’s easy to spot the d&b influence: the bass is deep, heavy and warm. The chords from the original are completely reworked, sounding much trancier and more epic, the beats are pacier, and a subtle acid line fills out the track perfectly. This is an excellent peak-time monster that shows that techno doesn’t always have to be dark and loopy.

Corrosion is all about the drums. Pounding kicks and rough snares propel the tune (but drop in and out of the mix at exactly the right moments), accompanied by congas and toms which gives the tune a really Middle Eastern feel. The distorted Arabic chants and stabby bassline add to the moody, slightly aggressive vibe created by the drums, but are balanced out by sparkly chimes and bells and uplifting synth pads.

Viva Shade’s remix uses most of the original elements (albeit in an altered state), but swaps the heavy drums for soft, round kicks and claps, and replaces the congas and toms with tablas and cowbells and adds some extra layers of shakers and hats. The bassline is sparser, the chants filtered down to sound more subtle and atmospheric, rather than be the focus on the tune, and the synths are chopped up and reverbed. Together, they all come together to produce a deep, chilled-out version of Corrosion, perfect as an intro track or even a last tune of the night.

Words: Andrew Wowk

We also recently caught up with Andy to talk about his musical life and the Viva Shade remix that lit Sonarpilot Remixes EP3...

[Sonarpilot] The Sonarpilot Audio ethos is ‘music inspired by people, places and travel’ . As a travelling nature photographer, did any specific places or experiences shape have any bearing on your remix of ‘Corrosion’?

[Viva Shade] I have been to some amazing places on my travels. Indri calling through Forest in Madagascar, Borneo Gibsons at dawn in Danum Valley or the sound of the call to pray echoing off of tall building in the heart of the city can be powerful experiences. In real terms these are only subconscious influences, although I'm intending to do some sound recording on my next trip (Colombia) so something may find it's way into my work in the future.

[SP] For any production enthusiasts out there, tell us a little bit about your studio set up. Do you use hardware synths or virtual instruments? And, what’s your favourite plug in at the moment? (super geeky question!)

[VS] Well, I use the Ableton Live 8 Suite. Given the first software I used was Cubase on the Atari, the modern software is amazing. I have a Presonus interface for real instruments Guitars, (Gibson Les Paul, Epiphone Semi, Tanglewood Acoustic and Yamaha Bass), Flute and assorted odd instruments. a Novation SL49 MKII controller and KRK Rokit RP8 G2 monitors. Mostly I'm using virtual instruments with some resampling of stuff I've played in live. My favourite plug-in? I’m currently enjoying Sonic Charge's Micro Tonic Drum Machine.

[SP] How has your past experience in bands effected your electronic productions today? Do any of your real instruments feature and would you play live now as Viva Shade?

[VS] From the very first time I got an instrument, I started writing my own tunes. Writing with, or bringing a song to a group of people can be inspiring and frustrating in equal measures. I do like the 'control freakery' of the studio though. Most recently I've been jamming Afro-Krautrock with friends, just for fun, we never do the same song twice! In terms of real instruments I've sampled bass lines, and little bit of guitar. I've thrown together a 'traditional' Dub track which includes flute and additional Sax, though that's not been played by me. At some point I'm going to produce a more rhythm guitar orientated track but I'm just going to let that happen as and when I'm feeling it. I've not ruled out playing live again, but I've not ruled it in either!

[SP] We know you’ve been collecting music for many years, what is happening today that excites you and what music have you added to the collection recently?

[VS] There's some fantastic musicians and producers out there at the moment, as well as, some brilliant digging for retro sounds. I've no idea about genres but its mostly the electronic bass music that's currently exciting me. Sampha/SBTRKT, Mark Pritchard, Nicholas Jaar, Koreless, Floating Points, Flying Lotus, Pearson Sound, Radiohead also the Soul Jazz, Trojan and Analog Africa releases, the list goes on...

[SP] You’ve just kindly compiled an influence mix for us, give us a brief background story to how just one of the tracks in the mix had a personal effect on you.

[VS] My first musical discoveries were via John Peel on the radio, there was no other outlet to hear such a broad range of music with me being brought up in Norfolk. Initially I was heavily into Punk but some mates were into Jazz Funk so I'd also go out dancing with them. Lonnie Liston Smith's Expansions is a classic track which would still get me up on the dance floor.

[SP] What are your plans for 2012 as a music producer and is there a Viva Shade album on the way at all?

[VS] I'm just continuing to write and learning more as I go. I'm potentially interested in more remix work too, depending on the project. I've always been very eclectic in my musical tastes and that means my output varies in styles too. If that can be incorporated into a coherent album, then maybe.

[SP] Thanks Andy!

remixes ep3 featuring trevino & viva shade - out now

Sonarpilot Remixes EP3 is officially released today, continuing the label's ethos of working with the world finest electronic music producers and delivering the highest possible sound quality. for this release we go deep, giving a definable nod to underground techno, abstract electronica and the 90s dance sound...

The first of two remixes on the EP comes from Trevino – the new alter ego of soulful drum and bass pioneer, Marcus Intalex. His collaboration with Martyn on ‘After Seven’ back in 2008 saw Marcus stride confidently into Techno and Dubstep production territory. That release, on his own Revolve:R label expanded his reputation well beyond the realms of drum and bass. Marcus has recently dropped his first long player ‘21’ with yet more hints of his deeper, slower sound adding the flavour while a release on Martyn’s 3024 label in the summer of 2011 launched the Travino name as Marcus’ new and permanent, non drum and bass moniker. The Trevino mix of ‘Radar’ features trademark lush pads and synths, tough European, techno edged drums and deep bass tones that hint at the 90s rave sound.

Sonarpilot’s original version of ‘Radar’ shines brightly alongside the remix on the EP building with layers of organic percussion, strong characteristic synth lines and his usual mix of cosmic and eastern sound bytes. The track once more highlights Moppert’s attention to detail and his creative stereo trickery – a quite unique sound that always seems to feel fresh with every listen.

Backing up Radar on the EP is ‘Corrosion’ remixed by Viva Shade, something of a Sonarpilot Audio discovery. Viva Shade is the alter ego of Andy Bunting, a seasoned player who’s ‘punk to funk and beyond’ sums up his musical background pretty well. Andy has played with numerous giging bands over the years and it’s this rich musical heritage, along with being an award winning photographer that brings depth and colour into his productions today.
