Sonarpilot Audio is always on the lookout for up and coming electronic music producers who have a certain something to their sound. While we constantly bring in the established name artists like Ramadnaman and Marcus Intalex to feature on our releases, we are also are known to ask complete unknowns to head up a release, if the music demands it. The man responsible for the wall rumbling 'Singapore Bass' remix of Ocean Dub, Evan Roberts AKA Team Brooklyn, is a fine example of this ethos. His mix headlining EP5, quite a first release for anybody when you look at our back catalog. Team Brooklyn was introduced to us by a mutual friend, of sorts...

We are lucky to have very close links to London's Point Blank music technology school and its here that Sonarpilot Audio label manager Jonny Miller, a course developer and tutor at the school, was to meet and tutor Team Brooklyn back in2011.

Sonarpilot himself has also tasted the school's forward thinking approach to education via the online school's Logic training, so we feel like we know the place pretty well. Naturally, when they asked us for an exclusive label mix for their ever popular blog, we got busy and have put together something very special. The mix features some choice Sonarpilot remixes and a couple of of brand new cuts coming out on the label later this year. You can check out the mix below and read full blog piece and mix here.

During the promo period leading up to release, the EP enjoyed plenty of club and radio play including the BBC's Bobby Friction spinning sounds from the release four nights in a row on his Asian Network show.

Remix number one and two come courtesy of another little Sonarpilot discovery, a young producer who will be making waves in the post dubstep, Bass Music scene from here on in. Evan Roberts, AKA Team Brooklyn, is a professional sound designer and studio engineer at the infamous Gunnery Studios in Malaysia. His intense ‘Singapore Bass’ reworking of Ocean Dub brings razor sharp synths, a wall of sub bass and heavyweight dubstep beats into play. Roberts them marries this modern sound with an epic Bollywood style vocal track, recorded in New Delhi by acclaimed movie soundtrack composer Gaurav Dayal. Both vocal and instrumental mixes will appeal to lovers of Eastern electronic music as much as Bass Music aficionados with the tracks sitting comfortably into a DJ set alongside other bass music artists like Chase and Status, Nero and Skrillex.

Sonarpilot’s soulful and chilled original mix swiftly follows with a more organic flavour. Moppert’s original productions once again shine through on the EP as his sound evolves and expands. His music always features that trademark Sonarpilot tight programming, sonic experimentation and root soul that wins him new fans with each release.

Lastly deep house mainstay Soy Mustafa gets to work remixing under his S2000 moniker. Soy’s Cinematic label is one of the most respected deep house labels in the world and regularly features the very top names in the scene, artists like Chez Damier, Alex Kid, John Tejada and Alex Celler feature on every release and the labels insistence to keep manufacturing vinyl has ensured Soy a loyal fan base. His ‘Dub Rendition’ remix takes Ocean Dub back to the 4/4, house dance floor with a rolling bass groove, clever percussion, subtle sound effects and haunting chords that seem to give the track a ‘classic’ deep house sound throughout.

By a good review, we mean a review that is a proper review of the music, not just a rehash of the press release. Be it good or bad, as long as its constructive. A proper review is when someone really listens to the music and actually forms their own opinion, chooses their words well and paints a picture for you of the sonics they experience when they listen to the music. So here, we give a thankful nod to Andrew Wowk from Pulse Radio.net for his great (proper) review of Sonarpilot Remixes EP3.
Review: Sonarpilot ‘Radar/Corrosion’ (Sonarpilot Audio)

Sonarpilot Audio has made quite the mark in 2011, and until now, it was only two EPs into its lifespan. The third release, featuring original material from label head Sonarpilot and remixes from Trevino and Viva Shade continues the label’s exploration of that exciting middle-ground where dubstep and garage sensibilities blend with the techno and house sound palettes.

The original of Radar is at its core a low-slung, slow-mo house ride, but it takes in elements of early 90s ambient, Detroit techno and garage along the way. It’s a lesson in how to put together supposedly contradictory elements into a coherent whole: the beats are tight and snappy, but surrounded by slightly loose organic percussion, the bassline is deep, dark and rumbly but offset by light, warm synth stabs, and choppy, mumbled vocals are occasionally swapped for Eastern chants.

Marcus Intalex turns in a remix of Radar under his new Trevino moniker, a pseudonym created so he can explore music outside the realm of drum & bass. His remix is lush, driving, melodic techno, but it’s easy to spot the d&b influence: the bass is deep, heavy and warm. The chords from the original are completely reworked, sounding much trancier and more epic, the beats are pacier, and a subtle acid line fills out the track perfectly. This is an excellent peak-time monster that shows that techno doesn’t always have to be dark and loopy.

Corrosion is all about the drums. Pounding kicks and rough snares propel the tune (but drop in and out of the mix at exactly the right moments), accompanied by congas and toms which gives the tune a really Middle Eastern feel. The distorted Arabic chants and stabby bassline add to the moody, slightly aggressive vibe created by the drums, but are balanced out by sparkly chimes and bells and uplifting synth pads.

Viva Shade’s remix uses most of the original elements (albeit in an altered state), but swaps the heavy drums for soft, round kicks and claps, and replaces the congas and toms with tablas and cowbells and adds some extra layers of shakers and hats. The bassline is sparser, the chants filtered down to sound more subtle and atmospheric, rather than be the focus on the tune, and the synths are chopped up and reverbed. Together, they all come together to produce a deep, chilled-out version of Corrosion, perfect as an intro track or even a last tune of the night.

Words: Andrew Wowk
